a nightmare by trustahope a nightmare by trustahope
Okay. So here's my thought on something a little more serious. My thing is, after the 18 years of verbal abuse/terrorism that Mother Gothel put Rapunzel through, and after spending your life believing that someone was your MOTHER, come to find out she stole you away from your family, your ROYAL family, she wasn't your mom, and she kept you to herself, locked away in a tower for her own selfish reasons, even though she always told you it was for YOUR protection. She never loved you and spent years telling you otherwise. And then she topples out of a tower after stabbing your boo.

There are repercussions to that kind of treatment. And I can only imagine that'd be something Flynn would occasionally have to walk her through.

But not in a "Rapunzel is a weak female" angle, because I think she's one of the strongest princesses to come from Disney. An actual step to an independent female lead.
Just a moment of weakness. Everyone has them, even if you claim to be impervious. It's nice when you've some warmth at that time.

there's my 2 cents.

ps - pascal cares, he's just a heavy sleeper.

I really like this image, and it is a perfect illustration of a moment between Rapunzel and Eugene that takes place in a fanfic short story I'm writing.
In the story, they are not yet married, but she comes to him seeking comfort after a traumatic incident involving an attempted assassination on her parents. Eugene saves them, and an unknown layer of his personal history comes to light.

Have you ever thought about drawing Eugene as a soldier?

I love this concept very much! I agree the Rapunzel is one of the strongest Disney princesses out there, next to Anna from Frozen. I also love how you have Eugene holding her here, as a beautiful gesture of his love and worry for her. It's very well made, and has lots of meaning behind it. Well done!

She would only be a weak female if she tries to bury those nightmares and not let Flynn help her move past them. And that's not what I'm seeing here. I'm seeing her slowly healing.

First you are an amazing artist! Second I completely agree with you. I feel like she would have these terrible nightmares or moments of weakness and Flynn would always be there. So yeah...

I love this piece!
I'm wanting to put together a slideshow of different pictures and pieces of art to the song "Run" by P!NK. It's mostly going to be about Rapunzel and her real mother but I was also wanting to add some Rapunzel and Eugene at the end and this would be perfect! Could I use your piece in it if I include a link to your deviant art in the description?

Nope, that actually WASN'T sarcasm; if you really think about it, Disney has tinkered with a lot of stories and managed to give them happy endings in their remakes-of-the-stories-into- movies. Very rarely does any Disney movie show any of the protagonists recovering from their previous traumas: Ariel basically had her voice ripped from her throat by Ursula's magic and watched her father get turned into a sea worm by that same witch. Prince Adam watched himself get turned into Beast and felt himself literally dying after his fight with Gaston. Rapunzel had to deal with years of isolation by her captive. Yet none of the sequels (if any are ever released) ever show any of those events that would most definitely cause constant nightmares in the most bravest of any Disney character.

So, once gain, thank you for adding some realism to your picture.

I completely agree. But I think that would turn those movies less into kids films, which for some reason people still consider most animation nothing more than something for children. They put their characters through some serious malarky, why not teach kids that there are after effects to being held captive, stabbed, orphaned, etc. And whatever the outcome is, there's nothing wrong with being the person who's dealt with less-than-favorable situations that basically effect a lot of who you are/who you become.

Then once again...thank you.

Sorry for all the typo's in the last message, and yep, if any character has to deal with any past life trauma's in a sequel, then yeah, the movie itself would go from being a family friendly film into something much darker and complex.

I've a correction to make and it takes place in The Lion King; Simba was so haunted by 'supposedly' killing his own father that he refused to go back to Pride Rock and would have stayed put where he was if it wasn't for Rafiki, Nala, and Mufasa's own soul urging him onward to his destiny. So, score one for Disney animated films.

Well done. So tender and heartwarming.
Rapunzel certainly seems to attract nightmares in a lot of fanfic, even my own, before I found Tangled fanfic.
For a moment she lost everything important to her, her "mother", her true love and her hair. She gets Eugene back but then has to go be a princess aka a completely different person.
Yeah, you're going to have nightmares at least.
Rapunzel getting to Happily Ever After was a major piece of work for her.

I love it. It both tugs at your heart strings and it's very clear on its subject. The emotional "terrorism" (as you put) Rapunzel endured without a doubt left deep scares that really only comfort from a loved one can at least try to heal.
